Composite Bonding: Small Changes, Big Difference
Composite bonding is one of the simplest, least invasive cosmetic treatments we offer — but the results can be genuinely transformative. In a single visit, we can fix chips, close small gaps, reshape slightly uneven teeth, or mask discolouration, all without drilling or injections in most cases.
🧠 What Is Composite Bonding?
Composite bonding uses a tooth-coloured resin (the same material we use for white fillings) which your dentist sculpts directly onto the tooth. The resin is shaped by hand, hardened with a curing light, then smoothed and polished so it blends seamlessly with your natural tooth.
🔍 What Can Bonding Fix?
- Small chips and rough edges
- Narrow gaps between front teeth
- Slightly short, uneven or worn-down teeth
- Small areas of discolouration
- Minor reshaping — e.g. softening pointed canines
For larger cases, veneers may be a better long-term option. Your dentist will talk you through both.
💬 What to Expect
- Colour matching — the shade is selected to match your natural teeth exactly
- Surface prep — a mild etching gel is applied to help the resin bond (no drilling needed in most cases)
- Sculpting — the resin is applied in layers and shaped by hand
- Curing — a special light hardens each layer in seconds
- Polishing — the finished surface is smoothed to a natural sheen
Typically 30–60 minutes per tooth. Most cases are completed in one visit.
🛡️ Caring for Bonded Teeth
Composite bonding is strong, but not as tough as porcelain. To get the longest life out of your bonding:
- Brush and floss normally
- Avoid biting hard objects or using your teeth as tools
- Cut back on heavy tea, coffee and red wine — composite can stain over time
- Come to regular hygienist appointments
Bonding typically lasts 5–7 years and is easy to top up or repair if needed.
⚖️ Cost
Cosmetic composite bonding is £300 per tooth at the time of writing — see our Fees page for the full price list.
