Dental Implants: The Closest Thing to a Natural Tooth

For many patients, dental implants are the gold standard for replacing missing teeth. They look, feel and function just like natural teeth, and with proper care they can last a lifetime. At Spixworth Dental Practice we offer implant treatment as a private service, with clear pricing and a planned, step-by-step approach.

🧠 What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a small, biocompatible titanium post that’s placed into the jawbone, acting as an artificial tooth root. Once the implant has fused with the bone (a process called osseointegration), a crown, bridge or denture can be attached to it.

Unlike dentures or traditional bridges, implants don’t rely on neighbouring teeth for support — and they help prevent the bone loss that typically follows tooth loss.

🔍 When Are Implants Suitable?

Implants can be considered for:

  • Replacing a single missing tooth
  • Replacing several teeth with an implant-supported bridge
  • Stabilising loose dentures (implant-retained dentures)
  • Full-arch restorations (“All-on-4” style treatments)

You’ll need adequate bone volume and healthy gums. Where bone is insufficient, a bone graft or sinus lift may be recommended first — these are available at the practice and quoted separately.

🛠️ The Implant Journey

  1. Consultation — thorough assessment including X-rays and often a CT scan; we map out the plan and costs in writing
  2. Implant placement — the titanium post is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic (with sedation if needed)
  3. Healing — 3–6 months for the bone to integrate with the implant
  4. Abutment & crown — once integrated, the final crown (or bridge / denture attachment) is fitted
  5. Aftercare — regular hygienist visits and check-ups to keep the implant healthy long term

🛡️ Are Implants Painful?

The procedure itself is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel pain during placement. Afterwards, most patients report mild discomfort for a few days — easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Sedation is available for nervous patients.

✅ Why Choose Implants?

  • Look and feel like natural teeth
  • No impact on neighbouring teeth
  • Prevent jawbone loss that follows tooth loss
  • Eat what you like, speak clearly, smile confidently
  • With good care, can last 20+ years — often a lifetime

⚖️ NHS or Private?

Implants are not normally available on the NHS except in specific reconstructive cases (e.g. after mouth cancer surgery). At Spixworth we provide implants privately — see our Fees page for the current price list.

Book an Implant Consultation (£90) and we’ll give you a written, itemised plan with no obligation.
