Daytime Dental Emergencies
Dental pain rarely turns up at a convenient moment — and when it does, the last thing you need is to wait days for help. At Spixworth Dental Practice we keep emergency slots in our daily diary so that when something goes wrong, we can see you quickly.
🦷 What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
Common reasons patients call us for an urgent appointment:
- Severe toothache — especially if it keeps you awake or stops you eating
- A broken or knocked-out tooth — particularly following an accident or sports injury
- A lost filling or crown causing pain or sharp edges
- Swelling in the face, jaw or gums
- A dental abscess (painful lump on the gum, sometimes with fever)
- Bleeding that won’t stop after an extraction or trauma
If you’re not sure whether your situation qualifies, ring us anyway — we’d rather you did.
📞 How to Get Seen
Call 01603 898414 first thing in the morning, or as soon as the issue happens. Tell the receptionist what’s going on and they’ll get you into the first suitable slot. Emergency patients — both registered and new — are welcome.
If you can’t get through, come into the practice. We’ll find a way to help.
💬 What to Do While You Wait
- For toothache: take ibuprofen or paracetamol as per the label; avoid very hot or cold food and drink
- For a knocked-out adult tooth: hold it by the crown (not the root), rinse gently if dirty, try to reinsert it into the socket, or keep it in milk, and come to us immediately — time is critical
- For a broken tooth: rinse your mouth with warm salty water; if there’s a sharp edge, cover temporarily with sugar-free chewing gum
- For a lost crown: keep the crown safe — bring it with you; some can be recemented
⚖️ NHS and Private
Emergency appointments are available on the NHS for registered patients and, where capacity allows, for new patients. Private emergency slots are also offered — see our Fees page.
