Dental Sedation

Dental Sedation: Gentle, Anxiety-Free Treatment

If the thought of a dental appointment makes your heart race, you are far from alone. Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people delay care — and delay rarely makes things better. At Spixworth Dental Practice, sedation is an option we can offer to help you get the treatment you need, calmly and comfortably.

🧠 What Is Sedation in Dentistry?

Sedation is a medication-assisted way of reducing anxiety during dental treatment. You remain conscious and able to respond, but deeply relaxed — often to the point where time seems to pass very quickly and you have little memory of the procedure afterwards.

It’s different from general anaesthesia (which is rarely used in a dental setting). Sedation is safer, simpler, and much quicker to recover from.

🔍 Who Is Sedation Suitable For?

Sedation can be a good option for:

  • Patients with significant dental phobia or anxiety
  • Long or complex procedures (e.g. multiple extractions, implant placement)
  • Patients with a strong gag reflex
  • Patients with special needs or difficulty tolerating treatment
  • Anyone who has previously had a traumatic dental experience

Your dentist will discuss your medical history in detail before recommending sedation, to make sure it’s the right choice for you.

💬 What to Expect

  1. Pre-treatment assessment — medical history, medication review, and a plan tailored to you
  2. On the day — arrive with someone who can take you home afterwards; don’t eat for a few hours beforehand (you’ll be told exactly when to stop)
  3. During treatment — sedation is administered, you relax, and the treatment proceeds gently
  4. After treatment — a short recovery period at the practice, then home with your escort

You’ll need to avoid driving, operating machinery, drinking alcohol or signing important documents for 24 hours.

🛡️ Is Sedation Safe?

Yes, when carried out by trained clinicians following strict protocols. We monitor you throughout the appointment and have all the necessary equipment on site. Millions of dental procedures are carried out under sedation every year, with an excellent safety record.

⚖️ Cost & Availability
